| That's right, I'm taking on the big one. As you may or may not know, I am an atheist. In short I do not take part in a religion. I do not believe in god. Now I should start by saying that I came to this decision myself. My parents are both catholic. Most of my friends are fairly religious. This was my own decision. And I should most definitely make one point clear. I have no ill feelings to anyone or any group of people simply because of the religion that they choose to practice. Nor will I ever. And I would hope that people would show me the same respect. Being lynched would not be a productive outcome for writing this article. For any of you interested I am now going to explain by beliefs (or lack thereof as some would say). If you think that reading this may jeopardize your faith then please don't read any further. Recruiting atheist is not the goal of this article. It is simply a way to express my point of view. Here goes. Throughout history religion has done more bad then good. Major wars have been fought throughout history simply because of differing religions. Think about that. Wars have been fought. Millions of people have died. And for what? The spiritual fulfillment of a few. I won't deny that lots of people have had religion help them in some way. But for the vast majority they would still be alive today had religion not existed. The same is true for all the people that did, in fact, die for their religion. And then we go on to the subject of money. How much money is put into religion? In Europe there are churches that are literally lined with gold. Sure they look really nice. But could that money not be spent in better places. But you could bring up the point that may non-profit organizations are run by churches that help people in need. Why need those be run by churches? Is it not possible that some people may simply be doing it to improve the public relations for their religion. I'm not sure how priests and the like are payed but I'm guessing that it depends on what they take in during the offering every Sunday morning. The more people they get to come to church the richer their organization gets. Another point that might be brought up is that organized religion gives people a sense of morals. Makes them a better person. No it doesn't. It makes people paranoid. They only act better because they are told that there is a omnipotent being looking over their shoulder for their whole live. The being that created them and also chooses what will happen to them after their death will base the all important decision simply on what they've done with their life. Who wouldn't decide to turn over a new leaf? And what about this whole creation thing. I'm vary interested in this whole evolution vs. religion battle. As I'm sure you've assumed I believe solely in evolution. One of the aspects of the Adam and Eve story is that god created humanity apart from all other creatures on this world. Humans are better then simple animals. That's why god created us separately. And yet evolution and natural selection are rules that all living things abide by. Suddenly humans aren't quite so high and mighty. Two theories about were we came from. And I can't see how they can both be right. One other thing I'd like to talk about is the bible. The good old holy book. Stop me if I'm wrong but the bible is a collection of awe inspiring stories that actually happened. I have a different point of view. I believe that the bible is simply the worlds vary first fictional best seller. I know this is dragging on so I'll make my final point and then rap this up. Where did religion come from? Why was it ever conceived? I believe I have a vast majority of the answer. From the beginning of time humans have had a fear of dying. No one comes back to tell you what happens. And humans fear the unknown. It's natural to do so. So to feel better someone comes up with the idea of an afterlife. And so religion was born out of the need for a understanding of death. Just think of one of the most famous bible stories. When Jesus rises from the grave. He dies and then gets up and walks away. Something that we all wish we could do. And there you have it. My view on religion. Once again I must say that I'm not trying to offend anyone or to convince them of my point of view. Religion is such a touchy subject that I wonder wether or not I should post this. But then I thought of something. This will be posed on my quote page. What good is a belief that can't withstand debate? So I came to the conclusion that I should upload this but with warnings. And here it is. I'd be happy to post any responses to this article. As I would with any of the others that I write. If you're looking for ways to contact me look no further then the bottom of my homepage. |
