Real Name: Ayuru

Position: Shogun of Kutou
Group: Seiryuu seishi

Who is He?

Nakago is the Shogun of Kutou and the leader of the Seiryuu seishi, the chosen warriors of the Dragon God of War. When Yui arrives in the Universe of the Four Gods it is Nakago who rescues her and takes care of her for three months. During that time he tries to convince Yui that she had been abandoned by Miaka. Yui refuses to believe this at first, but when she sees Miaka kissing the man she has feelings for Yui turns to Nakago, becoming Seiryuu no Miko and the enemy of Miaka and her Suzaku seishi.

For a long time Nakago is the only Seiryuu seishi we meet. Yui does not search for seishi like Miaka did, they are either found by Nakago or drawn to their Miko. While Miaka gathers her seishi Nakago concentrates on hindering her efforts. He sends numerous, rather ineffective, lackeys to deliver messages or attempt to kill Miaka. It is Nakago who sees to it that Tamahome becomes a captive of Kutou. He often informs Yui and Tamahome of Miaka's progress, especially when the news he has is sure upset them.

Later Nakago leads the Seiryuu side's search for the Shinzaho. Even then he prefers sending other seishi to do the actual work, remaining away from battles. He is the one who does almost all the planning among the seishi. Near the end he controls Kutou's armies as they attack Konan. Only during the final battle does Nakago bring all his power against the Suzaku seishi.

What are His Powers?

Nakago has extreme control over his chi, which he can use in various ways. He can teleport and is highly telekinetic, moving very large objects with seemingly no effort. He can create destructive chi blasts capable of destroying entire city blocks. Nakago is the most powerful of the Seiryuu seishi, probably of all the seishi of the Four Gods, since he is the favored of the God of War.

In the end, Nakago's best weapon is his mind. He is without a doubt the most intelligent character in the series. He is a skilled manipulator, knowing just what people need to hear. He can make nearly anyone do as he wishes and most of the times never lets others even see that they are being used. He is a strategist, always having a back-up plan he can fall on if his first one doesn't work as expected.

Nakago is a talented soldier. When faced with Tamahome, the second-best martial artist, he has no problems taking down his enemy. He also carries a sword, though he is never seen using it, but it can be assumed that a soldier would be familiar with many different types of combat.

The Webmistress Speaks

  Why do I like Nakago?

How could I choose just one reason when there are so many?

Part of the reason is his combination of intelligence, power and charisma. He can be listening to Yui's concerns one moment and the next he is planning the deaths of the Suzaku seishi. He is mature, focused and ambitious. He does not let recklessness ruin his plans, but always keeps his mind on a bigger goal. He has sacrificed nearly everything that made him human in order to fulfill his dream. This also makes him tragic, for he can't allow himself to feel. If he did he might have to question his whole way of living.

Even though I use the term to describe him I do not truly believe that Nakago is a villain. He is not evil at heart. His past made him what he is and under different circumstances he could have become a good person. His life hasn't been easy, but it has given him a depth most characters do not have. I find it fascinating to think of all the wasted possibilities and the talent turned to evil that he has. He has suffered more than many of the Suzaku seishi who have numerous fans. I believe that Nakago deserves to be seen more deeply.
