XUPITER.COM SPYWARE
This is a heads up for anyone who has had a run in with Xupiter.com. One will know when they have encountered this spyware by having a new toolbar added (without one's consent) to their desktop which then directs you to casinos, Viagra and pornography as well as a few other sites of interest. This spyware first warns you as a pop up. Then a full screen of the Xupiter page, which is sort of a Yahoo clone suddenly appears. Later the page then reappears at regular intervals and only after that does one discover that it has not only reset your browser's home page to Xupiter.com but it has also added several icons to your desktop. I did a search on Yahoo and discovered that this spyware not only routes you to it's page everytime you surf the internet, it also applies spyware into your system registry as well as the advertising icons to your desktop (via ActiveX installation). It is capable of by-passing your java blocker as well as 99% of the virus protection programs on the market. In case you haven't noticed Xupiter has been written so that traditional methods of uninstalling are null and void and I do not recommend using the uninstall feature found on Xupiters web site. The only program to my knowledge that totally zaps Xupiter (as well as other spwyare) is Spybot (http://security.kolla.de/ ). Best of all it is free to download. (remember that manually uninstalling Xupiter using your registry could resort to disaster if one is not computer savvy.) To prohibit Xupiter from re-infecting your computer(s) I would recommend changing your security options on your browser. To enable these options open your browser and click TOOLS. A pulldown menu appears, click INTERNET OPTIONS. You should now see a set of tabs, select SECURITY. Once in the security menu find and click CUSTOM LEVEL. Now check the disable option for the following: "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" and "Initialize script ActiveX controls not marked as safe". Select the prompt option for "Download signed ActiveX controls". Once changed, your computer should not be re-infected by Xupiter.
