This spread formation stretches the defense and allows the offense to exploit mismatches.  The lineup of three wide receivers, one back and a tight end is pretty standard.  But when the tight end shifts out a few steps, the set looks more aggressive.  The defense appears to be covering this formation with standard 4-3 personnel,
which is probably not a good idea.  Willie Wright, split out to the right, is covered by a linebacker, with the safety ten yards deep and to the outside.  The same is true for the slot receiver on the left side.  A slant or hook pattern in the middle should be a sure completion.

This photo shows some of options Philip Rivers reads as he gets ready to deliver the pass.  Willie Wright is already a couple of yards across the line of scrimmage, sprinting to an open spot in the middle of the defense.  In the unlikely event that Wright becomes covered, Ray Robinson is swinging out into the left flat, with open field ahead.  This play has an excellent chance for a pass completion into at least a five to ten yard gain.

This play, a screen to the slot receiver, has become a staple of the Wolfpack offense.  The split end and tight end line up wide left, and at the snap charge downfield to block the smaller defensive backs.  The slot receiver, typically a very good runner with tailback instincts, takes the screen pass and follows the two blockers into the secondary.  Eric Leak gained some nice yardage on this play last season, and fans look forward to a healthy Tramain Hall scooting through opposing defenses next fall.
