Far too much of my time is spent twisting knobs, looking for that perfect tone. I've found that the sweeter the tone, the more you are into your playing. So in my eternal quest to make my sound enjoyable to myself, I have created this chart. The chart only applies if you have all of the gear (of course), but the concepts can be used with whatever gear you have on hand. The keys, in my opinion, on a good lead tone begin with a clear, hot signal at the point you plug into the amp, add the desired gain along with the ranges you want to boost (EQ), then your effects (whatever you like as far as color), and finally EQ your sound again before you go to the speaker output (perhaps just before the FX return) as your effects may change the gain or cut of certain frequencies. The EQ, to me, is where the real "shaping" takes place. |
