An Arborist is someone who practices arboriculture which is the care of trees.  So an arborist is someone who cares for trees.
Typically, a "treeman" is thought of as a guy with a chainsaw who cuts down unwanted trees and removes unwanted limbs.   I'm striving to be very good at that and also be more than that.

I received my certification as an arborist in February 2005 from a professional organization called the International Society of Arboriculture.
Getting certified required me to show that I have a certain amount of education and experience in the field (I now have over 15 years of tree work experience) and then I passed an exam that covers knowledge about trees and tree care.
Being a certified arborist surely doesn't mean I know everything there is to know about trees and how to take care of them.  It means I'm striving to be  knowledgeable and professional.

ISA has a program of continuing education that pushes me to constantly keep updating my knowledge.   I try to always be learning, sometimes by reading, sometimes by talking to other arborists, sometimes by observation and experience (recognizing my own mistakes !)

The more I learn, the more I realize how much there is to learn and how much  I don't know and appreciate more what an amazing and complex living thing a tree is.
