Safety Integrity
As a rule, I prefer to totally remove hazard trees. (and then plant a new tree in its place, if appropriate.) This way there's no way it can fall on somebody or something. I consider myself to be preservation minded about trees, but I am more safety minded.
Besides removal, trimming may be a good option for dealing with a hazard tree, depending on the age and size of the hazardous tree.
However removing large parts of old trees may cause them to greatly decline in vigor and slowly die so in these cases it is better to just remove them.
Proper trimming during the early life of a tree will encourage a branching pattern that is less likely to need any kind of artificial support later in life .
Where appropriate and safe, I can install a bracing and cabling system to prevent or repair a tree from coming apart. These are typically trees that are highly valued by the property owner.
Bracing and cabling is a good example of real "tree surgery". It involves a lot and is a big investment. Think of a favorite old tree like a favorite old pet. The veterinarian can do things to prolong the pet's life, the pet's owner has to use good judgement as to when these things are worth doing and when its time to say good-bye.
All my tree support systems are carefully custom designed and installed with high quality / high strength components. After installation, tree support systems should be inspected every 5 years or so by a certified arborist.
