My Grandfather: The Folklorist

My Grandfather Gainer was a folklorist, and made it his life-long ambition to preserve the folklore and music of the West Virginia hill people. He started the annual West Virginia Folk Festival in the town of Glenville, near his hometown of Tanner. He made a name for himself, and though there were often conflicts when his vision of the Folk Festival did not materialize, and contemporary "folk" music started coming on the scene, he is regarded as something of a town hero to many Glenville residents. Today, when there is a dispute over the exact words of a folk song at the Folk Festival, his book, "Folk Songs of the West Virginia Hills" is produced as the definitive source. This must amuse him from his perspective in the great beyond, because he himself always preached that the words of folk songs will evolve over time as they are passed in oral tradition.
