Crisfield, MD to Crisifield, MD (kind of...)

June 27, 2004

We started out from Crisfield with the understanding from NOAA that we were going to have 5 knot winds out of the south.  Yea, right.  We had no sooner gotten out into Tangier sound than the winds piped up to about 15 knots from the west.   After about an hour, we decided that we were not going to make it to Solomons and so we headed back into the XXXX river and put down the hook around 11 AM.

So in essence, we made about 3 miles of 'progress' northward today.

Fishing Bay, VA to Crisfield, MD

Sunday, June 25.

We released the lines at the Fishing Bay Yacht Club around 8:50 and headed out into the Bay.  The air was clear and there was a 5-10 knot breeze out of the north.

The trip to Crisfield went through Smith Island, MD.  Smith Island, like Tangier Island a few miles to the south, is a bay island accessible only by water.  Chesapeake Bay watermen predominate the island except when the touists arrive via tour boats from various places on the eastern and western shore of the Bay.  We had visited Tilghman a couple of years ago and thought it would be good to try Smith Island. suffice it to say, we would visit Tilghman Island again, but not Smith Island.  There just wasn't that much there.

We had planned on staying the night in Smith Island, but decided it wasn't worth the time, so at 5:30 we left Smith Island and headed to Crisfield, about 1 1/2 hours away.  We arrived around 7PM and put down the hook in Somers Cove.

Dismal Swamp to Hospital Point, VA

We had originally planned on staying at the Dismal Swamp welcome center and
viewing a couple of videos about the canal that were available, but then we
realized that with the restricted locking schedule on the Dismal waterway we
would arrive in the Tidewater, VA area during the afternoon bridge opening
restrictions. We therefore elected to leave in the morning with the rest of
the flotilla that was at the Welcome center.

Other than the thousands of biting flies, the trip up the Dismal Swamp was
uneventful....

We arrived at Hospital Point in the early afternoon, and immediately
dinghied over to Tidewater Marina and let the kids jump into the pool. We
called Jack and Millie Rose, our friends in Portsmouth, VA who run the West
Marine Trawler Fests. We agreed to meet for dinner later.

Dinner with Jack and Millie was a great time, and afterwards we stopped by
their apartment for a while. Millie lent Lisa a book called "Into The
Light", which is a story about a family of five who sailed their boat to
Iceland for the winter. This has me worried....
