The White House, completed     in 1800, has been home to United States presidents since John Adams. Since     its construction, numerous renovations and additions have been made to the     building. In 1814, during the War of1812, the British set fire to the White House,     gutting the structure and mandating extensive rebuilding. Between 1948 and 1952, the White     House again received rebuilding due to its deteriorating condition. As seen     in this picture, the appearance of the White House and its grounds in 1831     is markedly different from their present state.
