Powell, Colin L(uther) (1937- ), United States military leader and secretary of state under President George W. Bush (2001- ). He is the first black secretary of state in U.S. history.
Signed by United States president Jimmy Carter (seated at center), Egyptian president Anwar al-Sadat (left), and Israeli president Menachem Begin (right) in 1978, the Camp David Accords led to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel the following year. Sadat and Begin shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
