| My Washburn XB-600 is currently my only electric bass. I had a Hipshot installed on the low B which I sometimes use to drop it down to an A (just because I can). Before that I played a Steinberger L-2 (a killer bass I never should have sold... oh well). Before that, a burgundy mid-70's Precision. Before that, a gorgeous early 60's Rickenbacher 4001 (which sounded great, but was a little tough to play for some reason). I also have a 5-string Ergo electric upright bass, since the band does a fair amount of jazz and latin stuff. You just can't beat an upright for the perfect tone and 'vibe' on stuff like that. The Ergo is pretty much the neck of an upright mounted on the base of a cymbal stand, with a magnetic pickup under the bridge. It gets a great sound, fits easily in my tiny car with the rest of my gear, and by using an A/B switch I can change from electric to Ergo or back in about a second. This is very useful since our band leader, Joe, likes to keep things moving during a show. Check it out at ergoinstruments.com. |
| My main amp is a Hartke full stack, consisting of the 3500 head, and a 410 XL cabinet over a 115 XL cabinet. This is top-notch gear, and keeps my sound full, clear, and tight. And it's ALWAYS plenty loud! I also still have my first amp, a pre-CBS Fender Bassman. A friend of mine made me a dummy speaker load and I use it as a pre-amp for classic rock gigs. Sounds killer! You know that one will be listed in my will... In my rack I have a Yamaha PB-1 preamp that I use to send a signal to the PA system as well as in the studio. On the floor I have a Boss BP 200 effects unit, which has been very useful as it allows you to stack multiple effects like compression, EQ, chorus, etc. into any one of 40 user presets, so I can quickly switch sounds on stage. |
