The Dome of the Chain (Qubbat al-Silsila) is a smaller structure immediately to the east of the Dome of the Rock (background). Both were built by the early caliph Abd al-Malik, who conquered Jerusalem in 691 CE. Gold was added to the larger dome in 1968.
