MAR 01 2001: Checked out of VF-103.  INTO "C" School Norfolk VA.
MAY 07 2001: Checked aboard Strategic Communication Wing One Tinker AFB, OK.
MAY 24 2004: Check out of Tacamo.
JUNE 27 2004: NAVSCITTS NAVY SMALL CRAFT INSTUCTOR TECHNICAL TRAINING SCHOOL.  Stennis Space Center Mississippi.

Floyd Gamble

Joined the U.S. Navy in the April of 1941. Boot camp Great Lakes IL. Sent to School in Jacksonville Fl as an Aviation Metal Smith (AM). Assigned to and Plank owner of VB/VP-83 PBY Catalina's a Amphibious Patrol Bomber (Flying Boat) squadron in OCT 1941. May of 1943 changed to VB/VP-107 flying Consolidated PB4Y1 Liberators as a Radio/Radar and Top Turret Gunner. In Oct 1943 crashed on Take off with the Galloping Ghosts off the Brazilian Coast. Stationed at NAF Natal Brazil. Awarded a Navy Commendation Medal before D-day Jan 1st. Located a Blockade runner who was flying wrong Identification Flags for that time. Floyd's plane got shot-up so a cruiser was dispatched to sink the Rubber hauling blockade runner. Floyd Came home to the US (Miami) Nov 11 1943. Sent to Gunnery School at Dam Neck Naval Station Virginia. Instructed on VP-1 Ventura medium bomber Aircrafts. On VE-day the squadron was deactivated and sent to Brunswick Maine. Where Floyd participated in towing targets for the Battle ship Wyomings gunnery training. The purpose was to find a method to stop Kamikaze attacks. Floyd was almost killed by a Flak round exploding too close to his aircraft. Re-enlisted 1944. In 1945 Floyd Took the PV-1's to Clinton Naval Air Station, OK where the Aircraft were deactivated and scrapped. Returned by train to Maine only to find His Command had deactivated. Floyd recievd Orders to Atlanta for Air Controller school. After training in 1946 Floyd was sent to San Diego Receiving station and took a ship to Hawaii, Maui. Assigned to Air Group 11 flying the Grumman TBF-1 Avenger torpedo-bomber. Aboard the USS Boxer a 27,100-ton Essex class aircraft carrier the Air group departed for California with Dependents and Dogs. His Air group received the F-8F Fighters in 1947. In 1947 Floyd was back to Hawaii on the USS Valley Forge CV-45 a 27,100-ton Ticonderoga class aircraft carrier. The Valley Forge made a cruise to Australia and the Far East early in 1948 and then steamed the rest of the way around the World for an around the World cruise. Floyd got off the ship early by an Honorable discharge in Feb 27th of 1948. This was a Very Strict ship and 400 other sailors left when given the opportunity to be discharged. This ends Floyds Naval career. Shortly thereafter (Sept 9th 1948) he Left for the US Army Air Corps and finished his time till retirement. 1
