· Isolating, identifying, and enumerating microorganisms found in water and soil

· Performing common microbiological procedures such as the use and preparation of culture medium, Gram staining, biochemical testing, and safe laboratory operating procedures

· Performing water tests for total dissolved solids, filterable solids, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and turbidity

· Familiarity with common lab glassware, analytical balance, vernier scale instruments, autoclave, pH meter, TDS (conductivity) meter, DO meter, and hotplate/stirrer

· Preparation of solutions as percent by mass, in parts per million, and using molarity

 

Field

· Identifying indicator species, and common plants

· Identifying common fish, mammal and bird species

· Assessing habitat with species specific criteria

· Classifying soils, minerals, rocks, and landforms

· Using the BEC classification system for identifying environments

· Animal track surveying

· Performing a basic land survey

· Landscape interpretation from air photos and topographic maps

INTERESTS

I enjoy outdoor activities including camping, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, canoeing, sailing, water-skiing, swimming, river rafting, and I really want to try some rock climbing. I also spend considerable amounts of time enjoying my family, and learning new things on my computer.
