Mike's really rather sad Sydney Olympics  statistics  database
"A wonderfully obsessive and detailed job, which is just the sort of thing I appreciate." -

David Wallechinsky, author of "the Complete Book of the Olympics".
The idea of this database, if such it can be called, is  to provide a little statistical analysis of the results of the Sydney Olympic Games, and provide a little more information and depth than the medals tables usually provide. To this end, I have used the official report of the games to award points to competing countries for finishes in the top 16 of each event: 16 points have been awarded for finishing 1st, 15 for second, and so on, down to 1 for finishing 16th. Simple, really.

In doing this we can see in greater detail the strengths and weaknesses of countries and regions in each sport. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination: for example,  some countries may have won points by simply being given wild cards, but any suggestions, corrections and comments can be cheerfully hurled at me via my guestbook.
