Mike's Monthly Moldovan Monitor
May 2004

I'm  wondering how much longer I will keep going with these pages: in a rarely -visited website the monitor is not monitored a great deal- 12 months and I'll call it quits, I think.

I'll leave the usual dreary news to the end, I think. Instead, I typed "Moldova beautiful" to see what I would find: first up is the
North Moldova Rural Tourism Project with a few pleasant pictures of the countryside- I never saw any of the places featured by the way. Then there's this from a google webgroup, which claims that the most beautiful women in the world are from Moldova, and here are some photographs from a Moldova Country Guide, although I think they were running out of inspiration ny the third page- the university  building in Komrat, for example, lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. And you won't be surprised to learn that the search yielded rather a lot of sites where Moldovan women offer to marry you.

News, then. The new Amnesty International Report for Moldova highlights
police abuses and prison conditions, as well as concerns over political prisoners in Transnistria; there's a pretty gloomy piece
here from the BBC about the problems of an emigrating population, and there's the usual  roundup of regional political activity here from Interfax, including, inevitably, the latest round of talks concerning Transnsitria. Been there. Done that. Bought the peace agreement...

Good news: I found a webcam showing Chisinau
here. Bad news: it hasn't updated since 19 May 2003.

An Orthodox Church, Chisinau: very pretty, I'm sure.
