| About Me | ||||||||||||
| I began riding motorcycles in 1971, on a Suzuki 125 "Duster," in the hills, fields, and gravel pits of Southeastern Michigan. The Duster was reliable, but underpowered and evil handling. Whenever I went to get parts for the Duster at Anderson Sales in Pontiac, I would always stop and admire the Stormers in the showroom. After securing my first good job, I bought a brand new 250. I'll never forget those first rides on it, blasting through places with confidence where the Duster would throw me down. The excellent handling and good looks made me a British motorcycle fan for life. Though the Stormer will always be my "first love," I enjoy all makes and models of British manufacture. In the next few years, I raced the AJS in MX, X-C, and Hare Scrambles, collecting a few trophies. At one point it had a full enduro kit with lights and speedo. It was also an enjoyable trail bike. With a few minor mods such as the addition of a Mikuni carburetor, and some technical advice from the late, great Herb at Flint Indian Sales, the Ajay ran well for me. During this time a Triumph TR5T "Trophy Trail," a BSA 500MX, and a Greeves Pathfinder, passed through my garage, but the Ajay got ridden the most. I continued to ride it until the suspension revolution was well underway, and it was no longer competitive. I had a TT500 after that, and a Honda XR200, but it was never the same for me. I quit dirt riding in 1984. In 2002 when I got online and discovered that AJS was still in business, I got the dirt riding bug again. I bought a rough AJS 370 Y50 over Ebay and restored it to good near-stock running condition. Together we prowl the Northern Michigan woods. I also have a 410 Y51 project bike in the works. I am planning as much suspension travel as I can obtain without major frame modifications, and a "detuned" motor for woods work. |
