Kanyakamari the southern tip of India
This town is home to some of India's great civic memorials. Each out on an island where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet.
This massive statue is of Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar who wrote the epic Tirukural.
Many pilgrims come to Kanyakamari to visit the temple of the epic virgin goddess, Kumari. Pictured to the right is a temple housing the footprint, imprinted in rock, of Kumari. Behind that temple is the Vivekananda Memorial. Swami Vivekananda swam out to this rock island to meditate prior to his presentation at the World Religious Conference in Chicago in 1893. His presentation at that conference awakened the world to the spiritual teachings that are the center of so many lives on the Indian sub conntinent.
The Ghandi Memorial is another very moving part of a trip to Kanyakamari. Ghandi's ashes were housed here prior to their immersion in the cleansing water that meet here. The buildings design is such that each year the rays of the sun fall upon the exact spot where his ashes lay on October 2nd, the annjiversary of Ghandi's birth.
