First of all all of the records in the Courthouse in Cartersville, Georgia (Bartow County) state that Joel died intestate i.e., without a will. However my greatest discovery was my wife finding his original will -- in his handwriting . This will lists all of his children. All of the census records specify that Joel was born in Georgia. He married Betsy King in Elberton, Georgia when he was 19 years of age. I have a document that a Joel Brawner was a member of the Tennessee Volunteers during the war of 1812. He would have been 14 years of age. I am convinced that he was born in Elberton, Ga in 1798 even though I cannot prove it. As with other researchers I have been trying to determine Joel's father for several years. I have not been very active in research for the past few years but have not given up. Regarding Jesse Johnson Brawner and his wife Mary Ann Quarles, I have a lot of information. They had 16 children. Roughly half of these children moved to Texas, My Grandfather moved to Florida and the remainder stayed in Gerorgia. Since you received your information on the Brawners from Betty, I doubt that I have any information that you do not have. I corresponded with Betty for several years and we exchanged much information. She provided me with much more information than I provided to her. However, I did send her a copy of Joel's will plus some additional information on Jesse Johnson Brawner. TRUTH OR FICTION? Family folklore has it that Joel Brawner (1798-1866), a native of Elbert Co., GA, was shot in the back by a Union soldier in Cartersville GA when he refused to water the horses of the Union soldiers. Joel, the story goes, died of his wound three days later, but his wife, Betsy King (1800-1866), died immediately after the shooting of a heart attack. [Submitted by Jack T. Brawner] Historical Marker at the Bartow County Courthouse Bartow County Originally Cass, Bartow County was created by Act of Dec. 3,1832 from Cherokee County. His last words were said to be, "They have killed me, boys, but never give up." First officers of this County, commissioned March 9, 1833, were: Benjamin F. Adair, Sheriff; Chester Hawks, Clerk Superior Court; Leathern Rankin, Clerk Inferior Court; Nealy Goodwin, Surveyor; John Pack, Coroner. (Location: At the Courthouse in Cartersville.) Bealle came back to Georgia after the War, and married Lucinda Bohler, 22 April 1866 in Bartow County, Ga. There are two (2) tales about his death. One being he had cancer of the throat, the other being that a log rolled over him an injured him. He married ELIZABETH WALLACE March 1894 in Cartersville, Georgia. Notes for JESSE OSCAR BRAWNER: I recieved this information from Jack Brawner. When I started my family history research, I recalled a conversation I had with my Grandfather (Jesse Oscar Brawner) many years earlier when I was a teenager. Grand Pa told me that his ancestor and four brothers came to this country from Holland and settled in (what I heard) was Pennsylvania and went into the brick manufacturing business. He further stated that he was one of 18 children. Fairly early in my research I concluded that Grand Pa either meant or was mistaken re Pennsylvania. It was Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He also was in error regarding his ancestry. The interesting point I make is that Jesse Johnson Brawner and Mary Ann Quarles raised their two grandchildren for some unknown years -- this accounts for the Odom children being on the family group sheet. Susan Odom's husband was killed in the Civil War and Susan died of some unknown causes. I have not given up completely on searching for Joel's parents. The latest lead I have is that Joel was a member of Hall's Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers during the war of 1812. He would have been 14 years old at the time. And, of the many thousands of Brawners I have not come across any other Brawner with the first name of Joel. Another interesting point re Joel --He married Betsy King the same day, the same year that John Brawner married Betsy King (all of this took place in Elberton, Georgia) Either a mistake was made in the name or else Joel's first or middle name was John. I feel sure the latter is the case. Children of JESSE BRAWNER and ELIZABETH WALLACE are: i. SALLIE M.4 BRAWNER, b. 1895. ii. JESSE W. BRAWNER, b. 1896; m. MAE. 22. iii. JOHN RODGER BRAWNER, b. Dwelling # 374, Family # 378, Day Laborer List J.A. Casey, wife L.M., and 3 daughters. Dwelling # 375, Family # 379, Farmer According to a story told to me by my Uncle Clyde, Wesley moved his family from Georgia in a covered wagon to Texas in the late 1800's. With them they had brought all their pocessions. Near the end of their long journey they stopped for the night near where the old fort was in Fort Worth, Texas to rest his team and sleep for the night. He said this was close to the present day courthouse. The next morning when they arose from a nights sleep sometime during the night they had been robbed. Someone had stolen most of their pocessions. They continued their journey that day till he reached an area near the township of Joshua, Texas. Later he built a home on the property next to where the Union Hill Church is and lived there till he passed away.
