Mal's Profile

Mal on his first day of high school

Malcolm James Rhodes is the more disenchanted presenter on The Good Stuff, and thus he tends to play heavier, more angst-y music on the show than Mik. This said, the only truly shithouse band he likes is Limp Bizkit, and they rarely get a run anyway, so all's good. The side of Mal's music taste which is more difficult to explain is his love of bubble-gum pop, and in particular his rather disturbing obsession with Mandy Moore (this obsession once extended to him pleading with any listener who just happened to tape Miss Teen USA, hosted by Mandy Moore, to send it in to him and receive a free prize). Luckily for Good Stuff listeners, though, only twice have tracks in this vain been played on the show.
It could be said that Mal has quite a cynical outlook on most things, and this comes across heavily on the programme as he dissects sports, movies, music, television programmes, on-air promos, local educational institutions, organised religions, political ideologies, notions of social equality and just about anything else you can label, usually with heavy doses of sarcasm and a sharp wit. It should be remembered when considering what Malcolm believes to be the truth, though, that quite often he has no idea of what he's talking about. This is a trend common to both Mik and Mal. Opinions expressed on the Good Stuff need not be substantiated, that they came from the mouths of Mik or Mal should be enough.
As is very evident on The Good Stuff, Mal has a very competitive nature and is always keen to assert his superiority when he is proven correct on points of contention. To understand exactly where he is coming from, though, the Good Stuff listener has to understand that this competitive nature has emerged from constant expectations placed on Mal to live up to his little brother's high standard. Though he is a good three years younger than Malcolm, Stuey Rhodes outshines him in just about every aspect of their lives, and understandably this has had some effects on Mal's personality.
Another coping mechanism Mal uses is to take the attitude that nothing matters anyway. He used this line to great effect during his HSC year at Blue Mountains Grammar, and the effect on his results was noticeable. Malcolm was well respected among his peer group, though, and won the popular vote for Most Pessimistic (jointly with Mik) and Funniest Camp Incident at the end of year 12. The Best Sense of Humour Award that he was so pining for eluded him, though, and one gets the feeling that he is still getting over the dissapointment. Few apart from Mal would deny that this award went to a deserving winner, though.
Having completed high school, Mal is now working as a surveyer's assistant, which basically means he dons an orange vest and puts little markings in the cement where he's told to. Though Malcolm gets no actual enjoyment out of this line of work, in all likelihood he will retain this position for at least the next 10 years because he won't be bothered to look for anything else.
This makes him cool, you understand. It really does, and this is why he is so perfectly matched with Mik on the Good Stuff. While Mal's carefree attitude leads the Good Stuff in all sorts of unpredictable directions, Mik is able to always keep the pair focused and you might say act as the show's anchor. One thing is for sure, though, when Mal is not on-air, The Good Stuff is a lesser programme.
