Friendship is never really ending, especially if the friends are very close.  Some even say that friendship can cross the gap between life and death,  maybe they are right.  Sara and I became friends shortly after a plane crash took her sight from her.  I know very little about her past, but i do know that that plane crash also took her parents and baby brother from her.  Sara had shoulder length chestnut colored hair which gently framed her oval shaped face.  Her eyes were like two lifeless sapphires set perfectly in the center of her face.  We lived in the city orphanage for five years, each of us needing the trust and love of the other.  Then  we were adopted by Anya and Scott Johnson, a young and caring couple who could not have children of their own.
Anya had golden blond hair which seemed to shine from with-in and eyes that shined like two new emeralds.  Scott had unruly auburn hair and milk chocolate colored eyes, which always had a soft look to them.  Scott was the owner of a large corporation and Anya was a teacher at the local school that Sara and i attended.  We lived with them for about six months before Sara was hurt again.
It was a cold and dreary day in mid-February, Scotts company was doing well so he decided to get a new car for Anya.  Scott and Anya decided that they would take the new car out on the town that night.  Sara decided that she would like to stay home, so I stayed and kept her company.  The car was a bran new red mustang, with black leather interior.  Sara stayed by the window after Anya had finished describing the car to her.  Shortly after Anya left to get ready for the night, two figures stepped through the hedges.  The first figure was a small boy with dark brown hair.  Slowly he snuck towards the Mustang, once he was close enough he quickly dove beneath the car.  He was only under there for a matter of seconds, then when he stood he glanced from window to window stoping when he came to the window that Sara was standing  at.
He turned sheer white then ran back to the shadows apparently telling his companion, who stepped momentarily from the shadows, before hastily returning to their safety of their darkness.  Yet he had not retreated before I got a good look at him.  He was taller than the first boy.  He also had  jet black hair and small narrow eyes.  Just as Scott and Anya descended the stairs the boys disappeared back though the hedges.
The goodbyes were short, though  now is when I think about it.  As they drove away, I noticed a large puddle where the car was parked.  A few hours later, there was a sharp knock on the front door.  Janus, the maid, opened the door and showed an officer and Alexander, the vice president of Scott's company, into the living room then called Sara and I.  Once we entered we were asked to have a seat, the officer then informed us of the untimely death of Scott and Anya Johnson.  Sara turned away from the officer, she seemed to tune him out and this shook him up very little.  He quickly turned back to Alexander and said, " I leave the preparation and the girl's care to you, sir."
Sara seemed to run on automatic for the next three days, never sheading a tear when anyone, but me was around.  The more Alexander tried to get to know Sara, the more that she went in to her own little world.  Many people came to the house bringing  well meant wishes and flowers of all types.  I hoped that someone in the family or house hold would take Sara so she would not have to go back to the orphanage.  The Johnsons were not a big family, there were only a total of  four left and Anya was the last in her family.  Scotts Brother had a wife and  twin boys and were not as well off as Scoot was so they said that they could not properly provide for a girl of Sara's needs.   Scotts sister was a star reporter and traveled the world getting stories, so that would not be a good life for a growing girl.  That left Scott's Mom and Dad, but they lived in an  retirement home and no children were allowed there.
I had almost lost hope till the day of the reading of the will.  In the will everything was left to Sara, the company was in Alexander's care until she turned 18.  So being a good man Alexander stepped up to be Sara's guardian, although now i think about it she would have been better off in the orphanage.  He did not know much about Sara or I so he kept the house hold staff.  Alexander decided to move in  because Sara would not go out of the house.  Over the next week the house was full of activity, Alexander was moving his stuff in and he was also moving some of Scott and Anya's stuff in to storage.  I kept Sara out of the way and away from harm.  I never had liked Alexander and i never hid that fact from him now.  It was almost a month before I saw the boys again.  Sara was in her room listening to music so i decided to wander around the house.  I had walked over to the big window that had the best view of the  gardens, that is when I saw Alexander and the boys talking.  The smaller one left back through the  hedges, while Alexander and the second boy headed for the house.  They went directly to the office, which had been Scotts not that long ago.  The door did not work right, it would not latch unless you turned the handle while  you shut it, luckily for me Alexander had forgotten about that.  I quickly snuck down the stairs and close to the office door as i could with out moving it.
Alexander and the boy were having a discussion when i got there.  " Chad, we have two problems.  One Scott left everything to that charity ward Sara, and secondly from the way that Duncan talks she saw  him cut the brake line.  First Chad you have to find out what Sara knows about Scott and Anya's death and secondly she will have to be gotten rid of so we can take the company to the next level."  The voices stoped and footsteps headed for the door, I quickly retreated back to Sara's room.  She was still listening to her music and had not noticed that I had been gone.  Shortly after I returned to her side there was a  knock on the bed room door.
Sara turned her music off and asked who it was, Alexander answered, " Sara it is Alex and there is a young man that would like to meet you.  May we come in ?"  Sara answered, with the tone that a princess would take to a servant, turned towards the door and said, "You may enter."  Alexander entered followed by Chad and said, "Sara, I would like you to meet my nephew Chad.  Chad this is Sara, my ward,  and her shadow."  I stayed beside Sara, for I was worried for her safety, Chad and Sara greeted each other politely, then Alexander went on to say, " I hope that you two can become friends.  Sara,  Chad will be staying here for a while."  Then he left the room, Chad stayed for a few minutes trying  to get Sara to talk, but left when he got little to no response from Sara..  Once he left  she turned the music back on  and turned to face the window.  I let her know I was still there, closed the door and lay on the floor listing to the music with her.
Weeks past and slowly Sara was coming out of her shell when Chad was around.  I was constantly worried about her, but she was happy when he was around.  Chad or Alexander had not yet learned that Sara was blind, for she never needed a guide on the grounds.  The staff knew and kept everything in its place and never spoke of Sara's disability for they thought it common knowledge.  I also noticed that Chad started acting differently towards both Sara and Alexander.
Finally it came down to the day when i could stop worrying about Sara.  It was a warm fall day, Sara was down by the garden fountain when chad found her.  There was a gentle breeze from the south and his voice seemed to flow with it.  He told her everything about Alexander's plan and that he was sorry that he had gone along with it.  He also told her why he was really there, apologised to Sara for hurting her, and got up to leave.  At first I thought about letting him go, but the look on their faces told me that I couldn't.  I stoped Chad from leaving and gave Sara a nudge to tell her that it was ok to tell him the truth.
At first she gave a little laugh and I thought that she was not going to tell him, but then she said,  "Chad, I am glad that you told me the truth.  Now it is my turn to tell you my secret."  He looked a little shocked, but sat back down as she started her tail, "As you know Scott and Anya were my adopted parents.  Well I was also in the plane crash that killed my birth parents.  I lost my ability to see anything, but now I am starting to see shades of gray.  My doctor at the orphanage said that my blindness could either be permeant or temporary, but only time would tell that.  So I could not have seen Duncan cut the brake line and I have never been able to see you."  She just stood up and left Chad sitting there.  I gave him one last look before I turned and followed Sara up to her room.
Once Sara was asleep, I went back down stairs.  There was a fight going on in Alexander's office, the voices belonged to Chad and Alexander.  "I can not kill her, she did not see anything.  Duncan was mistaken," said Chad.  "Thats where your wrong boy, she did see Duncan and she is the only one that can stop the plan," said Alexander.  "Alex listen to reason," begged Chad, "right now there is only two peoples blood on our hands and the cops wrote it off as an accident, but if Sara is killed they might reopen the case, then we will be caught for sure."  Much to my surprise Alexander said, "Okay, Chad.  We will let Sara live and think of a way for me to keep the company."  I quickly retreated from the door as their footsteps approached.  I watched as Chad  exited the room and Alexander close the door, once again forgetting to turn the handle.   Just as Chad turned into the parlor, I saw Duncan come out of hiding in the office.
"Told you that he had turned on us," said Duncan, "If she did not know before she does now.  I over heard them talking in the garden, he told her everything and that he was going to go to the cops with the information."  "Well then Duncan, my boy that leaves us only one option.  To frame him with both mudders and we must not waist any more time, it must be done tonight," said Alexander.  I did not wait around to hear the rest, I did a quick sweet of the downstairs and could not find Chad, so i returned to Sara's room and hoped that I did not run out of luck.
I never left Sara's side that night, I even slept at the foot of her bed.  I would say it was about three in the morning, when a shadow near the window moved.  Slowly I moved in to an attack position, my dark hair helping to hide my movement.  "Sara, I have come as you have requested.  What did you need," asked Chad in a whisper.  I knew then what they had plan, but where were they going to strike from was what I did not know.  Then a loud crash came form the other side of the room, i quickly turned and lunged at the sound.  Sara sat up not knowing what was going on and Chad being smart closed the drapes and yell over the crashes of the stranger, "Sara hide."
I heard Sara get out of bed and move to the desk and smash the lamp that had been put in for the benefit of others.  Then she hid under her bed.  I hoped that she would be safe there, Chad had only moved two steps from the window, so the second figure did not know right where he was at.  The second figure was still crashing around the room towards the window.  I positioned myself so I could  jump him as soon as he opened the curtains.  He finally made it there, I hated to see what the room would look like when the morning came.  When the curtains where opened I saw that it was Duncan, I gave him no time to get his Barings or to turn  around to face me before I jumped him.  Yet I forgot one major factor, the window was completely open, I hit him with so much force that we both fell out of the window, which was not a good thing because it was a third story window.  Duncan was lucky enough to get a grip on the lader that Chad had used to enter Sara's room, but I was not.  I hit the ground hard, I knew that I would not live to see the morning, but my final wish was that she would.  Just before I blacked out, I saw Chad push the lader with Duncan, still on it, over.  The next morning Chad and Sara went to the police.  She comes to visit my grave with Chad and her new guide dog.  But I still remember her saying to me on the day we met.
"I lost my family and  my sight, but Shadow you have been beaten and starved.  If you can learn to love and trust humans again, then so can I."  Now she walks away from my small cross beneath the large oak tree she says, "You were more than just my guide dag, you were my teacher and my friend."
