Chapter Six
"Miguel, listen!" Kay whispered as she stopped dead in her tracks. "Do you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Miguel asked as he furrowed his brow in concentration, trying to hear whatever Kay did.
"That noise," Kay answered vaguely as she waved her hand trying to get him to be quiet. She started walking toward something, and Miguel, unsure what she was doing, decided to just follow her. "Look!" Kay exclaimed as she pointed through a bunch of bushes. Miguel nearly gasped as he saw what appeared to be a hotel in the distance. "Let's go!" Kay yelled as she grabbed his hand and started toward the hotel in a dead run, despite the fact it couldn't have been closer than half a mile.
"Wait up Kay!" Miguel called as tried to keep up with her.
When they reached the front lawn of the hotel Miguel hunched over, unable to go any farther without stopping to catch his breath. "How did you keep up that pace for that distance?" he asked between huge gulps of air.
"What are you talking about?" Kay looked at him like he was crazy. "It wasn't that far and I wasn't even running my fastest." Miguel groaned in response. "Well come on! Let's go inside."
"How may I help you?" a young woman behind the desk asked as Kay dragged Miguel in.
"We were thrown overboard our boat," Kay explained. "Do you have a phone we could use to contact our parents?"
"Of course Miss," the woman answered as she pulled her phone up from the desk and set it on the counter. Kay smiled at Miguel as she picked up the phone to call her dad.

The phone ringing was what woke Sam Bennett from a very explicit fantasy involving Ivy Crane, and he was not happy about it. "What?" he snarled into the phone.
"Dad?" a hesitant voice came from the other end of the line.
"Kay?" Sam asked in disbelief. "Are you okay? Where have you been?"
"Miguel and I are fine," Kay answered distractedly. "We're on a little island about forty miles from St. Kitts. Can you come get us?"
"Of course," Sam said. From the tone of Kay's voice, he almost thought she would have been calling from the Book Caf needing a ride home. "What happened? How did you get off the boat?"
"Well, to make a long story a little bit shorter, when Miguel came to my room to get me, the inside stairs to the top deck were closed, so we had to take the stairs on the outside deck. When the boat lurched I got thrown overboard and Miguel jumped in to save me." Kay smiled at Sam's gasp. "He somehow got us to this little island and we've been here since."
"And you're both alright?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. Oh, you know what? It would probably be easier for me and Miguel to fly to the mainland and then you could pick us up."
"They have planes?"
"Yeah, Miguel's waving the brochure in my face. Cut it out," she said good-naturedly.
"Okay sweetheart, I'll wire you the money for the plane, but you have to call me back with the information on where we need to pick you up."
"Cool. Thanks Dad," Kay answered. "I'll call you back later."
"Okay, bye."
"Bye."
Sam hung up the phone and immediately picked it back up to call Luis. He was definitely going to want to hear about this.

"So we're taking the plane home?" Miguel asked with excitement.
"Yes," Kay answered with an exasperated smile. "But with my luck it'll crash somewhere and we'll be marooned on another island."
"I wouldn't mind," Miguel told her.
"Really?"
"Kay, things have changed between us, and I'm not so sure that I want them to change back."
"What do you mean?"
"I want you to be my girlfriend."
Kay stared at him with utter disbelief for a moment. "You want me?"
"Yes."
"To be your girlfriend?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
"Yes!"
Kay threw her arms around his neck. "I'd love to be your girlfriend, Miguel."
"I love you," Miguel answered.
"Really?"
"Are you going to question everything I say to you while we're going out?" Miguel smiled at her.
"No, just the really hard to believe stuff."
"Well then I guess I'm just going to make it less hard to believe. I love you, Kay Bennett."
"I love you too, Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald."
