Ship Wrecked

Chapter Five

"Kay, will you please talk to me?" Miguel pleaded with his best friend as he tried to keep up with her.

"We have nothing to talk about," Kay said stoically as she moved quickly through the thick tree branches.

"Kay!" Miguel grabbed her arm and spun her around, causing her to lose her balance and fall, pulling him to the ground with her. As he looked into her eyes, he leaned down and brushed his lips against hers.

'I have to be dreaming,' Kay thought to herself. 'But I definitely don't want to wake up.' As their kiss grew increasingly passionate, until Miguel had to stop and pull away for air. "Wow," was all Kay could manage.

"I agree," Miguel answered softly, as he stared into her eyes. "Kay, I know I haven't exactly been a shining example of a best friend lately," he paused as she opened her mouth to interrupt. "Let me finish. I know I haven't really been here for you, and I'm really sorry."

"Miguel, it's not just you," Kay said. "It's everybody. My parents, my sister, even my best friend. Everyone would rather be around Charity, and it hurts."

"Oh Kay," Miguel said with guilt. "I had no idea that you felt like that. I mean, it makes sense now."

"What does?"

"Why you've been acting so strangely whenever Charity's around. You kind of withdraw from everyone."

"I do?"

"Yeah."

"I didn't think anyone noticed I was there, much less I was acting different."

Miguel leaned down and kissed her again. "I always notice you," he said firmly. "Come on," he continued as he helped her up.

"What are we doing?"

"We're going to keep walking around until we find someone or something else here."

"I don't understand," Charity said cluelessly, as usual.

'What else is new,' Jessica thought to herself. 'Oh no, I'm turning into Kay.'

"Charity, Miguel and Kay disappeared from the boat," Grace explained patiently.

"How could they just disappear?" Jessica asked. "Wouldn't somebody have noticed?"

"Apparently there was some kind of a storm," Sam started. "Luis had ordered everyone to meet on the top deck. Miguel went to get Kay, because of her fear of water, and no one has seen them since."

"Poor Miguel!" Charity said.

"Dad, is Kay dead?" Jessica asked bluntly. Despite how much her and Kay fought, she still loved her sister, and didn't want anything bad to happen to her.

"Kay is not dead," Sam answered firmly. "She and Miguel are going to be just fine."

"I think we're lost," Kay said as the walked.

"We are not lost," Miguel replied. "We're just a little unsure of where we are at this particular moment."

"Which is why we've passed the same clearing four times already," Kay raised an eyebrow as the stepped into a small clearing between the trees.

"Okay, so maybe we're lost," Miguel conceded.

"Good, now make us found," Kay said as she started forward and moved in another direction.

"How am I supposed to do that?" Miguel asked as he followed her.

"I don't know, you're the guy," she responded as ducked under a fallen tree.

"What does that have to do with anything?" he asked as he hopped over the same tree.

"Men are supposed to know where they're going," Kay stopped, smacking her forehead. "No wait. That's only after a girl convinces them to stop and get directions."

"The was one time, and you're never going to let me forget about it, are you?"

"Not on your life. We walked around that amusement park for an hour and still couldn't find the ride you *had* to go on."

"And it turned out to be a behind a ride we had walked by six times," Miguel finished. "I remember. And if you have such a superior sense of direction then you lead."

"Fine," Kay agreed as she started walking again, while Miguel shook his head and started to follow her.
