Chapter Two
The wind is blowing all around me, making it harder for me to keep my balance. As I am about to lift me left leg, I hear something.
“Kay!” A familiar voice calls from a distance. “Kay!”
I know that voice. It’s Miguel. My eyes brim with tears as I decide not to turn around. “He will only make this harder.” Is all I can say to myself. As I was about to lift my left leg, I feel arms around my waist. Pulling me farther and farther from the edge. “Let me go! Let me go!” I scream as I flail my arms around and kick to get out of their grasp. Tears slowly descend down my face. “Let me go.” Are the only words I can utter.
“Kay. What were you thinking?” Miguel asks trying to look in my eyes. He reaches his hand out and rests it under my chin, trying to raise my head to his eye level.
“Why would you care?” I snap. Pushing on his chest to get out of his grasps. I turn around and run back to the edge. This time I will not hesitate I tell myself. I was one foot from the edge when I jumped. I could feel the wind all around me; it felt like I was flying. My hair was blowing in my face when I heard the water getting closer. “Kay no!” I heard Miguel call from the distance. It’s too late I try to tell him. I felt tears cursing down my face as the water hit me. It felt like I hit a ton of bricks. Not to painful. I felt nothing. Everything was cold for a while, but then…it was just black.

“Kay no!” I hear myself scream as I saw her body go over the edge. No. I came her to save her, to not let her do it. But I failed. I felt myself running, trying to see if she was alive. As I got to the edge, I felt fear pulsating through my veins. What if I looked and all I saw was Kay’s lifeless body floating atop the surface? I shook it off and peered over the edge. Nothing. Where was she? “Kay!” I yell, my voice cracking just a bit. I have to get help I tell myself as I force my eyes to look away from the edge.
I run with speed I never knew was in me towards the nearest phone I could find. I search my pockets for any coins I may have with me. “Twenty five cents, damn it!” I curse as I pick up the phone and make a collect call to Luis. “Miguel.” I reply impatiently to the operator when she asked for my name.
“What do you want Miguel?” Luis asks annoyed.
“Luis, you have to call Dr.Russell and tell her to have a room ready and send an ambulance to the Harmony Bridge now!” I tell him while looking around seeing if I can see any glimpse to Kay.
“What? Why?”
“Kay.” I say while fighting back tears. “She just jumped off the bridge. I don’t see her anywhere…”
“Miguel, I’m sure she’s fine. Try to stay calm and look for her. Search the bank of the stream and any possible place she may have drifted to.”
“Ok, but hurry!” I yell as I slam down to phone and race down the trail to the bottom of the bridge.

I pick up the phone and dial as fast as I could.
“Dr. Russell speaking. How may I help you?”
“Eve, hi. It’s me, Luis.”
“Luis? Hi, what’s wrong?” Eve asked concerned by the tone of his voice.
“You need to head down to the Harmony Bridge immediately. There is a possible suicide.” I asked, seeing the picture of Kay dead in my eyes.
“God, who?”
“Kay Bennett.” I reply trying to gain my composure. “Miguel saw her jump off the bridge about 10 minutes ago. Get an ambulance down there as soon as possible. I’m headed down there right now.”
“Headed where?” I hear a voice ask behind me.
I turn around swiftly while talking. “Eve, I got to go. Tell Grace and Sam for me please. Thanks.” I reply while hanging up the phone.
“Sheridan, you and me are headed to the Harmony Bridge. Don’t ask for details, just get in the car.”
“Why? What happened Luis?” Sheridan looked at Luis with concern in her eyes.
I look back at Sheridan but turn my gaze away from her. “Kay Bennett just jumped off the bridge. She may be dead and I need to get there and check it out.” As I say this I turn towards the door and usher Sheridan out. I take one deep breath and head out the door.
