Chapter Two
She groaned as she tried to get the key to work at her house. She couldn't have the wrong key, she had just used it the day before. Giving up, she banged her fist on the door. "Mom, Dad, open the door, my key's not working... Come on... " she groaned and hoped that this wasn't her punishment for not coming home the night before. She was tired so she leaned against the door and banged it with the back of her head. "Open up. Open up."
Just then Jessica Bennett opened the door and Kay went falling backwards. "Kay , what are you doing out here? It's 8 in the morning, we all thought you were still in bed."
"In bed? Okay then. Whatever. Where's Mom and Dad? I need to talk to them... Last night me and Theresa were coming home from the party and-" Kay started, picking herself off the ground.
"What did you do to your hair???" Jessica interrupted. "Is this some kind of scheme for Miguel to notice you or something?"
She ran a hand through her hair. "I've worn my hair in the same blunt cut just below my chin since middle school, Jess. Why would I need to get Miguel's attention? I think after yesterday's party that-- oh, nevermind. Where's Mom and Dad? I need to tell them what happened last night."
"Mom's in town shopping, Dad's at the station. What party are you talking about?" Jessica asked but it was too late because Kay flew out the door to talk to her Dad.
*Harmony Police Station*
Sam Bennett was leafing through some papers as a dark- haired girl came running in. "Dad? Earth to Dad?" Kay waved a hand in front of his face.
"Kay? I hardly recognized you. Is that a new hair cut?" Sam asked looking up from his desk.
"Okay, is everybody playing a joke on me or something? Last night, I was coming home from the party with Theresa and we were-" Sam cut her off.
"Party?! You know you and Simone are in trouble because of the jazz club incident. I want you to go straight home until your mother and I can have a talk with you." Sam scolded.
"Dad... I can't believe you said that about Simone... That's not even funny at all! I'm trying to tell you I was-- you know what? Nevermind. I'm going to go find Mom!" Kay ran out of the police station in tears. "I gotta find Mom..." she murmured as she ran down the street.
*Family Store*
Kay ran into the store hoping to find her mother working behind the register. No one was in the shop, but she heard movement in the backroom. Figuring it was her mom, Kay fumbled in her purse and found a tissue. "I wish Miguel was here... or Ethan... they could help me through this. I can't believe Daddy was so cruel to bring up Simone... " Kay said to herself. She thought back to the accident two years ago...
*Flash back*
"Jason, come on..." Simone pleaded as she stood on a long dock that came from the beach to out over the water.
"Simone, don't be a chicken. Just jump in." Jason coaxed. The 13-year-old smiled secretly as Kay crept up behind Simone.
"I can't... I'm to scared. I'll be on the beach if you want me." Simone turned to leave and then Kay pushed her into the water.
"See, Simone? You're doing just fine." Kay laughed and jumped in behind her. They had fun for over an hour until Simone got brave...
"You guys, let's play tag. You're it, bro!" Simone yelled to Jason as she went under the docks. Jason swam fast after her and dived down. When he came up under the docks, he didn't see her anywhere. "Simone? Kay, is Simone out there?"
"No, isn't she under there with you?" Kay started to panic. Simone could swim well but she wasn't great under water...
"I can't find her, Kay!" Jason yelled out. He dived down until he felt something with his hand... it felt like seaweed... thick, thick seaweed. When he came out and couldn't find Simone anywhere he started yelling her name loudly. "Simone! This isn't funny!"
"I'm sorry for pushing you in earlier, come on... SIMONE!!!!!" Kay started to get desperate. "I'm going to get help!" She yelled as she started running down the beach to where Eve and Whitney were sitting having a picnic.
"Mrs. Russell!! We can't find Simone! She went under the docks and she didn't come out!" Kay yelled. Eve and Whitney both ran as fast as they could...
Eve Russell told them later it wasn't their fault... Simone's foot got tangled into the weeds...
*End Flashback*
Kay wiped the tears from her eyes. "I just need to talk to Mom and everything will be okay." She assured herself. "Mom, you back there?" she asked while standing in the door way to the back storage room.
Grace came out wearing jeans, an old t-shirt and a handkerchief on her head. She wiped the dust off her hands with an even dirtier rag. "What is it, honey?"
Kay stood there, not knowing what to do. Suddenly she opened her mouth in a blood curdling scream. In scary situations, her father told her what to do if she had to face something like this. Run as far as possible and she did just that. She ran.
Tears blurred her vision and she ran straight into Ivy Crane. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going, ma'am." She started and then looked up. "Oh, God, it's you! Thank goodness, Mom!" Kay hugged Ivy tightly while tears ran down her cheeks.
