Santiago   Bernabeu's   Postcards
Madrid,  Spain

This historic stadium situated downtown is owned by Real Madrid Club de Futbol and was the venue for the 1982 World Cup Final, won by Italy (3-1) against Germany, as well as the venue for three European Cup Finals in 1957, 1969 and 1980.

Santiago Bernabeu was the president who decided to build a new stadium because the old Chamartin stadium, which had opened in 1924 and was able to hold 22,500 spectators, had become too small for the club's fan and was also falling into disrepair.   The stadium was officially inaugurated in 1947 with capacity for 75,342 spectators.   It was the most modern in the country and has subsequently been repeatedly and extensively renovated.

In order to increase capacity, the second tier was shut down for a while in 1953, and a third tier was added to the stadium. This new layer brought the total capacity of the stadium up to 100,000 spectators, most of them standing.   Later on, in the run up to the 1982 World Cup, played in Spain, a cover was added to the stadium, which reduced the total capacity to 90,000 spectators.   In the 90's the stadium was further modernised to ensure a greater level of comfort and security for spectators, but reducing capacity.   Besides the elevation of the height, the most significant change are the four circular towers in each one of the corners of the stadium.
