| Olympic Stadium was built for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games and has been the home of the Expos since the start of the 1977 season. The leaning tower, the world's tallest inclined structure, used to retract the roof stood half finished until 1987 when the roof was finally completed. It took another 2 years before it became retractable and due to problems with opening and closing the roof, it had been permanently closed for several seasons. The retractable dome was silver on top and orange on the bottom with 26 white cones that linked the roof to the tower. It took 25 minutes to hoist the roof up or down. In 1998 the original Kevlar roof was removed and now the huge beige dome is made of plastic fiber material coated with Teflon and parceled into 63 triangular units. The canvas is supported by a cobweb of metallic beams and rods and suspended by 26 steel cables. The interior roof parceled into bigger units is opaque and blue. |
