| Maracana was always considered the largest soccer stadium in the world. The construction of the stadium was initiated in 1948 with the purpose to host the IV World Cup in 1950. After a 12 year interruption following World War II, the Finals went back to South America. Brazil was awarded the reopening of the competition and built this great stadium in Rio de Janeiro, called "Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho" and more known as Maracana. Brazil entered the tournament as the heavy favorite and reach the final. In front of near 200,000 fans in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium, Brazil opened the scoring but Uruguay fought back and took the unexpected lead and victory. Soccer is the national sport in Brazil, and the stadium is often filled to capacity with more than 90,000 people when there is a major match. Maracana is also used for other important sporting, cultural and religious events and mega-shows every now and then. |
