| The Stade Geoffroy Guichard was inaugurated on September 13, 1931 and it's also known as the "Cauldron", a nickname acquired in the seventies, a period of glory for the green-shirted Saint-Etienne team that between 1957 and 1981 won the French Championship 10 times and the French Cup 6 times, losing to Bayern Munich in the 1976 European Cup final. Michel Platini took them to their last national title in 1981 before the club began sliding amid charges of financial irregularities. This stadium, located two miles from downtown, hosted two important sporting events related to football (soccer): the European Nations Cup in 1984 and the World Cup in 1998, both won for France. Precisely for the World Cup, the stadium was refurbished. Before the renovation the capacity was 42,000 places, of which 19,000 standing, and now with a new and improved pitch have a seating capacity of 36,000 distributed in four stands called: Pierre Faurand, Henri Point, Charles Paret and Jean Snella. |
