Kava-kava (Piper methysticum) is a member of the pepper family and is native to many Pacific Ocean islands. Historically, kava root and rhizome was used in traditional social ceremonies to promote relaxation and a sense of well being. Kava ceremonies were and continue to be a key event when highly honored guests are welcomed.
The active constituents in kava rhizome and root are termed kava lactones. These compounds include methysticin, dihydromethysticin, kawain, dihydrokawain and yangoinin. The collective action of these constituents is thought to provide kava extract's relaxing effects. These compounds are found in the fat soluble portion of the root or rhizome. High quality kava extracts are derived from the rhizome and typically provide 30-70% kava lactones. Kava-norm provides the highest concentration of kava lactones currently available in the United States.

Contraindications, adverse reactions or interactions
Clinical studies have demonstrated the safety of standardized Kava extracts for both short term and long tem use. At the recommended dosage above, rear side effects such as mild gastrointestinal upset or allergic dermatitis have been reported. A more severe skin reaction, known as kava demopathy, results in a dry, scaly skin rash that requires close medical supervision. However, risk of this skin reaction has only been reported with excessive use of non standardized kava preparations resulting in the consumption of several grams of kava lactones daily.
