An extremely active and entertaining breed, the minpin does not follow the idea of what people view as a toy dog. . The minpin can best be described as a big dog in a small body.  Known for their devotion and loyalty a minpin does well as a family companion,or a playful pet for children, but tends to choose one person in the family as their private human.  Extremely intelligent the minpin can excel in obedience, agility and flyball. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the miniaturized version of the Doberman Pinscher but a much older native German breed that has been known in that country for at least 300 years. It is thought to have been developed by crossing the German smooth-haired Pinscher with smaller breeds, possibly the Italian Greyhound and the Smooth Dachshund. In its homeland, the breed is often called the Reh Pinscher because of its resemblance to a small species of deer. Used originally as an efficient barnyard ratter, it has become a popular companion dog. One of its most engaging  characteristics is the high-stepping hackney gait. The Min Pin looks fragile but is, in fact, quite rugged for its size. It  has lots of heart and stamina, and makes the ideal pet. The breed measures from 10 to 12-1/2 inches at the shoulder; the ears are erect, usually cropped to a sharp point. The coat is smooth, hard, short and glossy and may be solid red, or black or brown with rich tan markings. Grooming and exercise needs are minimal.
