WRITTEN IN BLOOD
First Broadcast: March 22, 1998

| The
Midsomer Worthy Writers Circle get together monthly to discuss books and
authors that come in to give talks. They are: Gerald Hadleigh, the
chairman who's house holds the meetings; Laura Hutton, a writer of
romantic novels and who runs the antique shop in the village; Brian
Clapper, a drama teacher who writes plays and his wife, Sue, who likes
writing children's books about a dragon called Hector, and finally
Honoria Lyddiard, who works on her typewriter to write historical novels
about her family, and her sister-in-law, Amy, who doesn't write but
enjoys reading. The meeting eventually comes and the group discuss which author should be next to come: after a heated debate, Max Jennings is chosen much to Gerald's misery. The others are puzzled and left wondering why Gerald doesn't want to see Max. When the day comes, Gerald asks Amy to make sure he and Max are not left alone. |
| The
meeting goes well, but Gerald is obviously begging for it to end. When
it finally does finish, Max goes back inside after everyone has left.
Amy wants to go back inside to carry out her promise - but her bullying
sister-in-law pulls her away and the leave. Amy feels guilty when the morning after the meeting, Gerald is found dead by the housekeeper with his head bashed in by a candlestick, and Max Jennings has disappeared. His housekeeper finds him in the bedroom. Gerald's body is naked, and his wardrobe has been emptied along with all the clothes. |
| Barnaby
and Troy have great difficulty unravelling the past and the life of
Gerald Hadleigh; no wedding certificate to match the wedding photo in
his house, no National Insurance number and no relatives. Could Max have
possibly killed him? Not when his body turns up at a seaside home.
