WHO KILLED COCK ROBIN?
First Broadcast: September 9, 2001

| After
an evening out, Dr. Oliver Burgess carelessly crashes his car along as
well as a man. Unsure of what to do and still shocked, he runs to The
White Swan and gets the landlord to help. They agree to call Frank
Lightbourne to help remove the car and see if anyone has been killed. They are the only ones out at night, apart from nosey neighbour Mary Mohan who cannot help but take a few noisy peeks out of her cottage windows. Although Dr. Burgess is sure he has knocked someone down, the other two are not so sure. After suggesting it could have been the Irish man, who has recently moved into the village, they look inside his cottage but see no one. |
| Barnaby is told of that night's events by Bill Pitman, the landlord. He decides to take a look in the Irish man's cottage and after discovering the man's name is Sean O'Connell, stumbles across nothing, of course, but an old criminal acquaintance of his, Melvyn Stockard. Stockard now sees himself as the squire in the village. Barnaby also learns that Sean O'Connell is a horse whisperer. |
| After
visiting other peculiar villagers to shed some more light on O'Connell,
Barnaby and Troy find themselves on the scene when a man is pulled out
from the well. He is Robin Wooliscroft. Julia Stockard, Melvyn's
daughter, is about to be married to Chris Megson, and Noel Wooliscroft,
the dead man's father, is the best man. Bill tells Barnaby all of the affair in Newton Magna when Valerie Megson, Chris' mother, decided to run off with Robin to live in New Zealand. The whole village thought they fled off together - but Robin obviously never got onto the flight. Could Valerie's unpleasant husband, Joe have killed in anger, or even Robin's wife, Bridget? Or might Stockard be involved - after all, he was opposed to the wedding, but would he dare try and stop it going ahead?
