THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

First Broadcast: October 10, 2004

The Fletcher's Cross Spirit of Friendship Group gather together once again. The medium is Rosetta Price, and her assistant is Eve Whittle. Several of the villagers trust Rosetta to get in contact with the dear departed. However, during Rosetta's trance, she issues a warning of sorrow for someone in the evening.

In a funeral parlour in the village, Patrick Pennyman returns home from work - he is an undertaker. His wife Janet is getting a supper ready, but after hearing Patrick enter the house, she finds herself waiting a long time. Eventually she calls out to him around the house and finds him dead in the Chapel of Rest - his wrists have been slashed. A villager and Anne Marr, who's brother Thomas is at the spiritual meeting, are the only ones to find her there screaming.

Barnaby is called on straight away and visit's the parlour, while his wife, Joyce, is out dining with a friend of hers called Elizabeth Key, who goes to the spiritual meeting for a bit of fun. Barnaby talks with Janet about why her husband might have taken his own life. Then Bullard realises it was murder - there is no knife by the body to slash his wrists, and  he believes the victim was struck with a funeral urn. Barnaby doesn't find Janet a great help but learns that Patrick was tight-fisted and a serious man.

Barnaby and sidekick Scott talk to some villagers that worked along Patrick: including James Griss, who almost came to blows with the victim, and Thomas Marr who also found him tight-fisted. Barnaby also visit's the church. He stumbles across the gravestone of David and Rosemary Key, possible Elizabeth Key's parents. Perhaps that is the real reason why she is going to the spiritual meetings, which have cropped up several times in interviews. A lot of the villagers are unhappy with Rosetta's work and some, like Sylvia Burgess, are passionately against it.

Elizabeth asks Joyce to join her at the meeting. Indeed they both go along - but there is more warning. Rosetta announces, in a trance, that someone in the audience is the loved one of an 'avenging angel' who is investigating death in the village. Joyce is terrified at the looks she is given. She tells Barnaby about it but he laughs it off.

As the case continues, Barnaby wonders supposes more and more that Rosetta is a fraud - but can't find a connection between her and the death of the undertaker. Until, that is, Elizabeth Key is murdered in her front garden the same day that the village celebrates the re-opening of the railway line. Elizabeth told Joyce some secrets about her past life.
Apparently, her mother, Rosemary, turned to help from Rosetta when her husband, David, died. Elizabeth's mother was terrified when Rosetta described him as having the scar almost in the shape of a dove on his body. Elizabeth thought they frightened her mother to death - and was conducting her own investigation.

Elizabeth also wanted her mother to be buried with a brooch she always wore - but she found it up for sale in an antique shop. Can Barnaby find a link? But who, now that Patrick Pennyman and Elizabeth Key are, is providing the information?
