THE GREEN MAN

Barnaby and Troy investigate when a teenager suspected of harassment is shot dead.
| Joyce
and Cully are helping in a canal restoration. The brains behind the
restoration is Timothy Webster, of Midsomer Worthy, supposedly a fully
qualified engineer - who actually runs a bus company. Several of the
volunteers are told to go into the tunnel, including Joyce, but then is
collapses. Back at the Midsomer Constabulary, Troy has opened his special letter - he's been promoted to Inspector! Not all good news for Barnaby, who gets a call from Cully sharing the bad news about Joyce being trapped inside the tunnel. |
| Troy,
left at the station, is the only one left to investigate a report made
from a villager in Midsomer Worthy. Apparently, an old man, Tom, has
been attacked in the woods by a group of yobs, one of them being the son
of Timothy Webster, Daniel. Troy is forced to rush to a hill where Tom
is staying. The only real friend he has in the village is Lord
Fitzgibbon, who may himself have sent the witness report. Troy is on his way until he is stopped in the middle of the road by Constable Crabbe, who tells him that Barnaby's wife in danger. Troy goes down there as soon as he can. |
| Meanwhile,
the trapped volunteers have been helped out by the other canal
restorers. But there has been a more gruesome discovery - bones and
skulls in a small chamber-like part of the tunnel. All of them seem to
have been killed for years - apart from one, who is more recent than any
of the others. Troy eventually gets back to finding Tom and catches him briefly, but not long enough. That night, one of the yobs are shot dead when they are lured to the woods, and the finger of suspicion immediately falls on Tom.
