THE FISHER KING
First Broadcast: January 11, 2004
Barnaby and Scott investigate the death of a wealthy landowner who has been speared.

| There
is a troubled world full of secrets and love liaisons in the community
of Midsomer Priors. Living in the watermill are father and son, Nathan
and Harry Green, who are under threat of being forced out by Gareth
Heldman and his business with Vanessa Stone, who also owns the bakery.
Gareth and his mother, Anne, own the mill and the land but have let both
of them live there. However Harry and Vanessa are lovers, and Nathan and
Anne are very good friends, so they both don't want to drive them out. Then there is David Heartley-Reade, an archaeologist, who has recently published a book called 'The Hidden Celtic.' His father, Paul, found a chalice in the Midsomer Barrow. David also wants to celebrate the Summer Solstice at the barrow, but the land is again owned by the Heldmans. Anne doesn't want them there ever since her husband died at the barrow when it caved in. |
| Her
husband, Roger Heldman, has been the cause of the tangled web of lies
and families across the village. He has most been known for his
aggression and has even been involved in sexual assault. This has caused
David Heartley-Reade to actually be the brother of Gareth, but there are
others suspected to be dotted around the village. David and his wife, Miriam, have been having some marriage difficulties but it is unknown what has sparked it all off when they have so much in common. This is why David is desperate to celebrate the Solstice at the Midsomer Barrow - he believes that each of them shooting an arrow of fire into the sun will make them more devoted to each other than ever before. David is sure - but Miriam isn't. |
| Joyce
is brought to the village for a talk at the library with Norwegian
archaeologist, Per Hanson, who is taking them on a walk to the Midsomer
Barrow. Joyce is being escorted by a friend of hers from the Library,
Jane Willows. Then while at the Barrow, Jane's daughter, Vanessa Stone, is assaulted by Roger Heldman. Jane disappears off to find her daughter who has escaped, and then Gareth's body is discovered dead on the river bank by David who has been fishing nearby. Barnaby and Scott lead the case - but will find themselves going back through history to find the answer. It looks as if the Barrow cave-in, the discovery of two hidden artefacts, a spearhead and a chalice, and Roger Heldman's reputation are all connected.
