SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE

First Broadcast: April 3, 2005

Little Upton has been famed for it's jam factory that produces the worldwide known 'Plummer's Relish.' It's their annual meeting and all the Plummer family have to meet up to discuss the business, which is evidently not doing as well as it used to be. Ralph Plummer owns the business - being the eldest son of matriarch Amelia, he promised his bullying father, Maurice, that he would keep Plummers and Sons in the family and not sell it to Fieldway Foods, like his siblings Caro and Anselm are suggesting.

Amelia is actually facing a dilemma of her own. She has recently seen hanging men on trees through her kitchen window and they later disappear. Her children think she is going mad, and she has even been taking things from the local antique shop which Ralph then has to pay for.

Ralph and Amelia vote that the business should keep going strong. Anselm and Caro vote that they should sell it to rival Fieldway Foods, who have been trying to get their hands n the secret recipe. Unfortunately, Ralph's wife Helen isn't allowed to vote because she isn't counted in the family. Caro complains that ever since moving in, she has wanted to try out every single job there, and that no one has ever been the slightest bit impressed.

A tour at the factory ends in tragedy when someone is murdered in the night. The victim is Dexter Lockwood. His bones have been crushed and he has been thrown into an active 200-degree sterilizer. The tours are led by Sam Hardwick, who's wife works at the factory and whose son, Alex, is the company director. The victim must have wandered off.

The factory security guard, Keith Carter, revealed that Anselm Plummer came home suspiciously late. Caro is sure that he was trying to steal the secret recipe to flog it to Fieldway Foods.
The victim is identified as Dexter Lockwood, a brand executive of Fieldway Foods, when a wallet is found in the incinerator. His father, Derek, is told about the death and is devastated. Derek is sure that one of the Plummer's killed him, and tells Barnaby that his father was also apparently killed by the Plummers, even though it was supposedly suicide.

All the Plummers are asked if they know Dexter - they all deny knowing his name let alone his face. However, they have each been secretly approached by the man, who has been trying to buy the business and secretly tricking all the family. More lies face exposure, and Amelia tells Barnaby about the hanging man in her garden. Who is trying to frighten Amelia - do they want her to sell the business? But who is most fanatical about the sauce in question?
