MURDER ON ST. MALLEY'S DAY
First Broadcast: September 22, 2002
| Sir.
Walter Talbot, once headmaster of the traditional Devington School in
Midsomer Parva, is gravely ill. He has a son, Anthony Talbot, who works
at the school, and he also has a grandson named Daniel, one of the
pupils. Anthony's wife Miranda cannot see how the family can be so
obsessed with the school, and is certainly unhappy in her marriage. Walter dies at midnight on St. Malley's Day. This is a very special occasion for the school. There is a St. Malley's Day race every St. Malley's Day. The boys from the school run through the village and the woods from the school. The first to come back to the school, with the rugby ball which is thrown from above by the headmaster, wins the race. |
| Barnaby and Joyce have been taken to the race by friends, who are interested in taking their son to the school. They meet the headmaster, Jonathan Eckersley-Hyde, who has the job of throwing the rugby ball to the group of boys. When the race begins, Daniel immediately takes the lead. In the village, the boys who are racing are indeed mocked by some of the villagers who find the school snobbish and tangled up in pride. |
| To
his father's pleasure, Daniel makes it back up the steps, with the ball
in his hand, at the school. However, he stumbles and falls to the floor,
dead, with blood all over his shirt. It seems he has been stabbed in the
chest. The wood is searched thoroughly, and they visit the school to get some idea of who Daniel's enemies and friends were. They discover he was part of the Pudding Club - a secret society within Devington, but the members are very tight-lipped about it's activities. It takes an old man whom Daniel confided in, the secret behind the Pudding Club and some more gruesome murders for the solution to be revealed.
