JUDGEMENT DAY
First Broadcast: January 29, 2000
| One
sunny afternoon, the villagers of Midsomer Mallow meet up the Perfect
Village competition which is being held in a few days time. Sadly, not
everyone in the village is feeling equally happy. There have been a
string of robberies and burglaries in the area. That evening, the famous
actor Edward Allardice's home is robbed and some valuable furniture and
ornaments taken. The finger of suspicion points immediately at local troublemaker Peter Drinkwater, who has a bad reputation and a record. Correctly so, it is he and friend of the local butcher Jack Dorset who are committing the serious crimes. Peter has also been having affairs with most of the women in the village. The next day, he is found unsurprisingly stabbed after being attacked with a pitchfork. |
| The other villagers are sure on continuing with the competition by keeping the murder quiet, but might this be a step too far? They don't find themselves alone in covering up the attack when Joyce Barnaby wins a place as a judge for Judgement Day! |
| The
judges meet for the first time. There is Rosemary Furman, editor of
Country Matters, a magazine, even though the lives in the city and has
terrible hay-fever. Frank Mannion, who presents the show, Along the
Garden Path. Samantha Johnstone, who has stepped in at the last minute
to replace another judge. She is a writer but is terribly depressed and
has a passion for drink, which she doesn't appear to stop doing. And
then there is Joyce, of course, who finds them all bonking mad. The judging panel arrive at Midsomer Mallow. Timothy Webster catches sight of Barnaby, who begs him not to spoil the event. Barnaby is only there to see Joyce, however. But the event is spoilt anyway. Bella De Vere sees someone taking some from the wine tent - and then she is poisoned, but not killed. Rosemary Furman, however, suddenly drops dead after taking a sip of the wine, which has been tampered with cyanide.
