DESTROYING ANGEL
First Broadcast: August 26, 2001
| Karl
Wainwright, owner of the Easterly Grange Hotel, has passed away. Barnaby
and Joyce are among the villagers who have gathered together for the
funeral. The hotel owner's Will has been divided equally between his four most trusted employees: Susanna Chambers, the manager, Julia Gooders, the book-keeper, Tristan Goodfellow, the hotel chef and Gregory Chambers, the hotel handy man. Gregory Chambers, who is known to be one of the beneficiaries, does not attend the funeral. Apart from working in the hotel, he also helps Evelyn Pope with the Punch and Judy show. With the fete that is taking place soon, Evelyn is most worried and tells Barnaby Gregory has gone missing. |
| The other concerned villagers decide to look for him, though unconcerned wife Susanna thinks he will turn up the next day. Unfortunately, the landlady of the local pub finds a severed hand with other while out looking in the woods, where Gregory was supposedly out picking mushrooms in the morning. Susanna confirms it is her husband's right hand from the marital ring. |
| An
investigation starts immediately and the new hotel owners seem most
peculiar, including Julia Gooders who seems more insecure than usual and
her husband, Kenneth. Then some death threats are delivered the four new owners, and poisonous mushrooms are delivered on their doorsteps. Tristan and already ate some fatal ones - identified by local fungi expert Colin Salter - and he has no chance of recovering. Trailing along are more murders: one flattened by a wine cabinet, another accidentally shot and two are close to death as their car is sabotaged. Barnaby finds himself relying on Punch and Judy to solve the murders.
