DEATH'S SHADOW
First Broadcast: January 20, 1999
| Joyce
decides that she wants to celebrate her wedding anniversary with Barnaby
by retaking their marriage vows. Deciding on a suitable venue, they
choose to hold the ceremony at St. Michael's Church, Badger's Drift. Also in Badger's Drift, Richard Bayly, a wealthy property developer has been told of his deadly illness of a brain tumour. Richard is not popular with the residents of the village. He has been known to destroy houses and trees to make way for new buildings. Shortly after attending a meeting about the village fete, he is murdered savagely in his extravagant home. |
| Barnaby is drawn back to the village to see Richard's body, which has been decapitated, and meets Barbara Henson, Richard's doctor, who tells him of Richard's tumour. She also tells Barnaby how Richard was scared and would be visiting the church that evening. |
| A
few days before the murder, Simon Fletcher, a successful director based
in the theatre, directing Cully's latest play, returns to Badger's
Drift. His head is full of disturbing childhood memories from the time
he lived there. Could he be the killer? Later on in the case, the vicar discovers that his Indian sword has been taken from his home and it is not long before they discover this was the weapon used to kill Bayly. But with each villager having an easy access to the house - why would anyone go to such trouble stealing a weapon to kill a man who was already dying? It starts to look like Joyce's dreams of a fairytale anniversary could be in jeopardy.
