DEATH IN DISGUISE
First Broadcast: May 6, 1998

| The inhabitants of The Lodge of the Golden Windhorse, a commune in Burton Mantle, are all wacky as eccentricity can become. But clearly one of them are much more than that when Bill Carter falls down the stairs. The master, Ian Craigie, had been rowing with Carter and says he tripped and fell. May Cuttle comes rushing to the Barnabys house, where Barnaby is taking the bones of a fish. After seeing May arrive, he desperately asks Joyce to pretend he is out. Unfortunately she barges in and finds Tom - who is now forced to plunge into the commune's latest story. |
| Bullard
arrives on scene and senses alcohol of the victim's breath. Carter's
neck is broken. He may have been drunk and, as Craigie says, fell down
the stairs. Barnaby talks to all the members there, apart from Tim Riley
- a young boy from a disturbing past that doesn't speak. The next day, the inhabitants find themselves welcoming a new arrival - Christopher Wainwright. Chris immediately falls for another of the populace, Suhami Gamelin. Suhami has a hidden past, similarly to the others. Her father is a millionaire and a famous symbol, while her mother is a booze-addict with an addiction to cocaine. |
| That
night, Craigie wakes up and feels that there is something not right in
the atmosphere. All the others get up, and as the storm lashes out,
Heather and Ken Beavers and Trixie Channing appear after being late for
mending a flat tyre. It doesn't take long to realise that Tim Riley has
disappeared. Thy all gather outside to look around; and a boulder is
pushed from the roof, intending to do harm to May Cuttle, who narrowly
escapes the threat. Christopher Wainwright insists on looking on the
roof but sees no one. Then Tim appears by the window. Why push a boulder
on May Cuttle? Barnaby and Troy have to delve through the bizarre life
of the communists if he wants to unlock the secrets that seem to be set
off by the respected master.
