DEAD IN THE WATER
First Broadcast: October 17, 2004
| The
Midsomer Regatta Day arrives in Midsomer, and Barnaby, Joyce and Cully
all hope for a good day out. They spend a tranquil afternoon on the
riverbank, until a body turns up in the river. It is the body of Guy
Sweetman who hasn't been seen for a few days. Barnaby and Scott find out from the chairman of the Rowing Club, Philip Trent, that Guy was a good friend. After mentioning that his lover, Sandra Tate, hasn't been seen for a few days, Trent starts to get desperate for the Regatta to continue ahead and fulfill their day's plans. Clare Bonavita is next on scene when she is distraught at learning of the death of Guy, who apparently could have been killed by an angry husband or jealous lover. Clare was a past lover of Guy, though being married, even though her husband who previously hit Guy has gone to Malta and could have been a suspect - actually, Claire is covering for her husband who is staying at their house. Clare is training young rower Henry Charlton who hopes to become champion. |
| A
chat with Vic Lynton, the barman of the club, is interesting when he
tells Barnaby about an argument he overheard between Philip, John and
Guy outside Trent's boat, the Arabella Jane. Though Vic is sure there
was a fourth party hiding in the boat and staying secure. Barnaby and
Scott also discover that Guy was hit on the head. That evening, Trent, Parkway and an older man, Causton jeweller Ivan Hawkins, meet in the Arabella Jane. It looks as if they are planning to rob Ivan's Causton jewel shop. |
| The
next day they decide on visiting John Parkway, a friend of Guy's and
part of the Rowing Club as well. They turn up outside his house, and
immediately suspect he's being blackmailed by a younger man, David
Cooke, after observing Parkway giving some money to him. Has it anything
to do with Guy's death? Then Sandra Tate returns from wherever she was - and is greeted with a hit across the face with a crowbar by a motor-biker. Mrs. Sharp, the neighbour who has also merely helped Barnaby with some clumsy clues is attacked. Who wants them both dead? Several of the villagers aren't who they say they are - but are any of them passionate enough to kill?
