BIRDS OF PREY
First Broadcast: January 31, 2003
| Julian
Shepherd, a bookmaker close to suicide, climbs to the top of Casement
Hall in the middle of the night. An old man, Charles Edmonton, is being
kept in the attic. He lets Julian in through a small window. Charles
Edmonton is a millionaire who is creating a new method of fuel-less
transportation. Julian begs for his money - which is trapped in the
latest invention, which Charles insists will be worth every penny. The next morning, Julian Shepherd is found dead in his car which has been pulled out of the lake. Barnaby takes the case - while Troy is out with a wildlife expert, out bird watching and looking into some dodgy wildlife crimes. Barnaby suspects so far that suicide is a possibility, and his suspicions are confirmed when the housekeeper, Maisie Cullen, thinks he could have driven himself over the edge. His business was failing and he'd split up with his wife and children. |
| The
investigations lead Barnaby to Casement Hall where most of Julian's
money is held. Outside the huge house is Mallory Edmonton, Charles'
wife, out flying her birds. She isn't too helpful with investigations,
and refuses Barnaby to go and see Charles, who she says is away on
business. He is actually upstairs asleep, and being treated by the
doctor, Dr. Naomi Sinclair, also Mallory's sister. Back with Troy and the wildlife expert, PC Sarah Pearce, the 'eggman' turns up. Another man, Edward Darwin, gets into the car with the eggman. Both the men swap illegal peregrine eggs for money. |
| After
being referred to Major George Hamilton, Barnaby turns up outside his
beautiful timber house. His wife, Eileen, and he, share the house which
is divided. Barnaby finds out for himself wheyn he follows the raised
voices between Hamilton and two other men. Most of George's part is
Afriacan-themed, with attractive masks and structures. Could the two men who don't look too blissful be more of the investors? Major George Hamilton doesn't seem to co-operate much either - and then a second person is killed when trying to steal peregrine eggs from Mallory.
