A WORM IN THE BUD
First Broadcast: 23rd June 2002
Barnaby and Troy investigate when a depressed dairy farmer turns up dead in a pond.

| Susan
Bartlett's body is found a pond in Setwale Wood. The land itself is
owned by James Harrington, who doesn't intend to leave it as a peaceful
environment, but Simon Bartlett wants to own the wood and save it from
being destroyed. Simon Bartlett tells Barnaby and Troy that Susan was becoming depressed due to her inability of having children. Before being told of her death, Simon found a suicide note on his computer sent from Susan. It looks like Susan drowned herself. Barnaby and Troy also visit James Harrington and discover that he and Susan once had an affair, though James says it was over. Simon is also having an affair with his barrister, Bernadette Sullivan, who cannot yet be trusted. |
| Sam Fielding, who found the body, is sure that his children saw Susan knocked out in the wood the same day. He calls Barnaby and they have words. Julie and Sean describe how they saw the body as if Susan was asleep. Barnaby supposes that Julie says this because she doesn't know what dead means. |
| Simon
and James are supposed to be best friends from schooldays. Their
mothers, both very strong and independent, are also very good friends.
Victoria is very keen on keeping the family firmly in the village along
with the farm. However, during the night, the flowers from Victoria's garden are snipped off and rearranged into the shape of a body on the lawn. What is the significance? And have all the affairs within the Harringtons and Bartletts caused the murder? Before the case is solved and closed, there are more bodies to come along the way.
