A TALENT FOR LIFE
First Broadcast: January 3, 2003
Barnaby and Troy investigate when a woman is assaulted outside a pub, but then the attacker turns up dead.

| There
is a meeting about the Malham Bridge Fly-Fishing in The Old Fisherman
Pub. Derek Seagrove has reason to believe that there has been the
problem of poachers growing. After the meeting, there is a row between
two of the fishers. Isobel Hewitt has rather carelessly called Margaret
Seagrove's fishing skills 'limited.' Not letting the situation drop,
Isobel slaps Margaret across the face and walks off. Margaret and her
husband are left motionless as Isobel and a friend of hers, Dr. Duncan
Goffe, walk away laughing. Margaret calls Barnaby and Troy the next day,
intending on pressing charges connected with assault. Isobel is quite the jewel in the village. She has many friends, and has a lot of the villagers around her thumb. Her uncle and his unhappy wife have been paying to keep her house and bills together, because Isobel has been penniless ever since her husband died. She is also visited on the very next day by an old friend, Leo Bantock, who's business has been doing well because of Isobel's help. Leo gives her a lot of money in exchange, along with a bouquet of white flowers. |
| When her uncle, Melrose Plunkett, and his wife, Rebecca, leave, Isobel meets up with her friend Quentin to practise her driving skills over on the old airfield. She stops for a picnic but it is not long before Barnaby and Troy interrupt by asking her some questions about the alleged assault. |
| Leo
Bantock's return isn't appreciated by all, though. He once had an affair
with Ruth Scholey, who's husband, Keith, a chef, isn't at all pleased at
seeing him again. Leo lets something slip about his wife being involved
with Dr. Goffe. Keith leaves the pub, Leo wishing he'd kept his mouth
shut. The next day, both Isobel and Duncan's body are found by the riverbank, battered with a stake nearby. Can Troy be right in his first casual assumption?
