After DCI Tom Barnaby accompanies his wife Joyce, a keen gardener, to a public meeting aimed at stopping the opening of a Tea Shop in the memorial gardens of a manorial home, a nasty murder puts the DCI off any thought of cream scones. The vicitm is the daughter of hate-target Elspeth Inkpen-Thomas, the lady of the manor, who wants to open the Tea Shop in the part of her grounds that was created for villager's use by a former owner. Soon Barnaby and Troy are digging into a heap of warring families, illegitimacy, secret sexual liaisons and religious ambitions to find the killer. |
