Bergerac
John played Jim Bergerac for just over 10 years and is probably best known for this part. The BBC broadcast Bergerac from 1981 - 1992, it reached nearly 90 episodes, over 9 series, including a number of Christmas specials. It was extremely popular at its peak and pulled in an average 10milliion viewers. Set on the Channel Island of Jersey it boasted some lovely scenery - some of which is no longer there today.
Sgt James Bergerac was a divorced, recovering alcoholic who liked to work alone. It was the dedication to his job, coupled with his drink problem that cost him his marriage and later caused friction with several of his girlfriends.  Despite his troubled personal life, Bergerac was an excellent Detective with a 99% clear up rate, he single handedly solved every crime ever committed on this small island, with one exception...Phillipa Vale. This character appeared in a number of episodes, and in my opinion these were the best ones. Played by Lisa Goddard, Phillipa Vale had an affinity for Diamonds, hence her nickname, 'The Ice Maiden', and continually gave Bergerac the run around. She always referred to him as 'Sgt Dear...' or 'James...' and the chemistry bewteen these two characters practically melted the screen - if it weren't for the fact that she was a Thief and he a Policeman it would have been a match made in heaven !
Bergerac worked for the 'Bureau des Etrangers', a fictious section of the Jersey States Police, tasked primarily to deal with visitors to the island and foreign companys, for the majority ot the series. But, after falling out with his new boss and acquiring himself a French girlfriend, Bergerac setup on his own as a Private Investigator, these last episodes were set primarily in France.

Charlie was Jim Bergerac's ex father-in-law and figured heavily in the series. He was a wealthy man, lived in a large mansion, drove a Rolls Royce and stood for all the things Jim hated. Despite this, they tolerated each other reasonably well and actually got on sometimes!
Charlie played a large part in Jersey High Society and was a constant source of information for Jim - in the majority of the cases Jim was investigating Charlie was either directly involved or new the people concerned.
He could be called the rich mans Arthur Daley, a little bit  dodgy but loveable with it !
When Jim quit the Police force, it was Charlie that helped him setup on his own as a PI, and then when Jim moved to France, Charlie was never far behind.
