'Why I hate TV's Boys Behaving Badly'
Laddism is a crime says old-fashioned gent and screen detective John Nettles
Driving along twisting Oxfordshire country lanes to meet John Nettles, its hard to believe that behind the doors of the chocolate box thatched cottages there's something sinister going on.
At least in Midsomer Murders there is. And John Nettles is loving every moment of the time he spends as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby trying to make sense of the events in the fictional village of Midsomer Worthy. By most peoples standards, Tom Barnaby is not your average TV cop. Most of them have drink, divorce or gambling problems.
Having played recovering alcoholic Jim Bergerac for 12 years, John Nettles is relieved that his current character is so ordinary. 'I like him. He wears a three-piece suit and drives a sensible Rover. Plus, Barnaby is a gentleman. He always says 'please' and is a great one for old-fashioned virtues.'
John is also a gentleman in the way that he hates the laddism which has infiltrated TV. 'Laddism is the last fart of male chavinism. Its a vicious mind-set dressed up as a fashion and its nothing of the kind. Its not a fashion in the sense that it is harmless. Its an ugly reminder of the past crimes of men against women.' Strong words. He nods.
'I hate all that. What they are doing is resurrecting all the attitudes that belong to the worst kind of pub mentality and pretending they are something different by adding a dash of irony. I hate it because they have elevated it into a form of entertainment as well. A lot of programmes now are based on a verison of expansive laddism and it makes you want to throw up. Its vulgarity dressed up as entertainment. The guys who first started off doing it are now becoming middle-aged. So hopefully it will die a death.'
The 54 year old actor certainly couldn't be further from those lads, living as he does in a lovely converted barn near Stratford, with wife Cathryn. 'I live in tranquility and splendour which befits someone of my seniority.' he says.
Despite the fact he's a good bit older than when he started out solving crimes in Jersey 20 years ago he still gets plenty of fan mail. 'The writing's more uncertain as the ages increase, one woman said I was the housewives favourite, I think that  puts me in the Jimmy Young brigade, which isn't a bad thing.'
He still regularly flies to Jersey to see his daughter Emma, who, ironically, is in the civilian back-up for the Jersey Police force - and to keep in contact with the island he loves.
So what of Bergerac ? Is he still solving crimes on screens around the world?
'He sure the hell is. An episode was shown in Mexico just the other week and I received a cheque for 13.03p. Whats more its still being shown on UK Gold and is coming back to BBC1 in the afternoons.
'But I've always found it a bit ludicrous that this rather scrawny youth could chase an XJ6 down the front of St Helier in a clapped-out Triumph Roadster, overtake it, get out, beat the hell out of a 6ft 6in ex-stuntman and walk away with his make-up intact. But I might watch it for a joke !'
